The Parochial Church Council has agreed a new Mission Action Plan, inspired by the recently-launched Diocese of London Capital Vision 2020.
Read all about this here:
Confident in speaking and living the Gospel of Jesus Christ
We undertake to:
Communicate the Gospel more effectively:
by specific, evangelistic engagement with local community organisations (especially the school, Willesden Court, Roberts Court) and with newly-built apartment blocks.
by use of social networks and other media.
by offering better ‘interpretation’ for visitors to church: a welcome/history leaflet, and a postcard for new attenders with useful information.
Organise a Parish Mission in 2014 or 2015:
possibly with the involvement of St Stephen’s House, Oxford
Provide refresher/training classes for readers, servers, intercessors and sides-people.
Provide regular bible study classes:
monthly sessions; perhaps also seasonal series in Advent and Lent.
Encourage testimony from members of the congregation: ‘I like coming to St Mary’s because…’
Encourage vocations to ministry and leadership where appropriate, especially ordained ministry and lay readership.
Discern and encourage gifts in members of the congregation.
in serving communities with the love of God the Father
We undertake to:
Commit to giving 5% of our annual income to charity:
balanced between local, national and international concerns.
invite suggestions from the congregation.
take particular note of diocesan priorities: eg ALMA.
deepen relationships with some of these charities: eg exchange of letters with sponsored children.
have particular care for persecuted Christians.
Look for opportunities to open up our church buildings to the wider community:
especially use of the Parish Centre by local groups.
Make the outreach to the local community (see under ‘Confident’ above) as much pastoral as specifically evangelistic.
Encourage and develop activities for local youngsters:
especially via music.
Explore ways to improve our personal welcome and hospitality at church services.
Creative in reaching new people and places with the Good News in the power of the Spirit
We undertake to:
Continue to grow the number of young people involved in church:
develop involvement in Sunday worship.
encourage Sunday School/Youth Group to do more fundraising for their own activities and for outreach/charity.
encourage joint activities with youth groups from neighbouring churches.
Encourage the growth of house groups.
Look for ways to extend use of the church for artistic events, especially educational ones.
Develop a programme of visits to cultural events, including/especially with the young people.
Use e-mail more to disseminate information, within the constraints of data protection and safeguarding statutory requirements.
O Lord, you have searched me out and known me;
you know my sitting down and my rising up;
you discern my thoughts from afar.
For there is not a word on my tongue,
but you, O Lord, know it altogether.
You encompass me behind and before
and lay your hand upon me.
Such knowledge is too wonderful for me,
so high that I cannot attain it.
Where can I go then from your spirit?
Or where can I flee from your presence?
If I climb up to heaven, you are there;
if I make the grave my bed, you are there also.
If I take the wings of the morning
and dwell in the uttermost parts of the sea,
Even there your hand shall lead me,
your right hand hold me fast.
For you yourself created my inmost parts;
you knit me together in my mother's womb.
I thank you, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made;
marvellous are your works, my soul knows well.
